Why Coach Enamel Stays Tacky (and How to Fix It)

Coach enamel stays tacky after painting

If your coach enamel stays tacky long after application, it can be frustrating. Many people see the surface dry, but the paint underneath remains soft. In this guide, we’ll explain why this happens and exactly how to fix it safely without ruining your finish.

The good news: it’s nearly always fixable – and it usually comes down to conditions and film thickness.

The most common causes

✅ Too cold

Cold temperatures slow curing massively.

If the garage is cold overnight, enamel can stay soft for a long time.

Fix: warm the space and keep the temperature steady.

✅ Coat was too heavy

Thick enamel can “skin” on top but stay soft underneath.

Fix: let it cure properly – don’t trap it under covers, and don’t try to rush it.

✅ Too much thinner (or wrong thinner)

Over-thinning can slow down cure and weaken the finish.

Fix: next time reduce thinner and apply lighter coats.

✅ Poor airflow

Paint needs air movement (not a gale!) to release solvents.

Fix: gentle ventilation and airflow around the job.

✅ Humidity / damp conditions

Damp air slows evaporation and can affect gloss too.

Fix: aim for a dry day and a stable environment.

What NOT to do

❌ Don’t cover the job in plastic
❌ Don’t stick heat guns on it up close
❌ Don’t polish it
❌ Don’t mask it with tape

All of those can mark it or lock solvents in.

The best fix (simple)

  1. Leave it somewhere warm

  2. Keep air moving gently

  3. Give it time to harden properly

If it’s very tacky because of a heavy coat, it may take longer – but it will usually cure through.

How to tell it’s ready

Try pressing a thumbnail in a hidden area:

If it leaves a dent easily → not ready

If it resists and springs back → much better
